Black & White Series: Society - Happy Ending

The Black & White Series: Society is a body of illustrations reflecting society behavior that I've observe and recreated to inform, reflect and question our knowledge and existence of what is happening around us. This series is slowly coming along near its quarter mark. The illustrations all have its specific voice and message but I haven't yet explained it in my blog. So since this is the last illustration post for the year, I thought I'll share some light on my work. (Or one work at least)

Happy Ending is my take on education, its involvement in the 21st century. The joy of graduation is short lived. These days, many of us take on great debt while pursuing our education, resulting in an endless payment of student loan once we join the work force. Indeed the graveyard for many.

INSPIRING ARTIST: Anthony aka. Antz

Voila~~ Its Friday again and that time of the week for~~~ INTERVIEW! Today's star is a special guest. Special because I've been following his artistic journey like a fan (in a small way) but yet I do sort of know him? (He is my senior in high school and subsequently went to the same art school as I did.) Anthony Chong, better known as Antz is an URBAN ARTIST with a unique illustrative style. Since his early school days, he has competed in the International World Skill Competition and won Bronze in the graphic design category. These days, apart from commercial work and creating toys, he coaches students for the annual World Skill Competition and is also a frequent mentor at Noise Singapore.

Black & White Series: Society - Muse'um

INSPIRING ARTIST:COLIN LEVY

Hi everyone, it is that time of the week again! This week, I interview PIXAR artist COLIN LEVY! I got to know Colin while (sort of) working on his film, The Secret Number. Since then, we've been bumping into each other at our school's labs late in the nights. Colin is a great guy and he even invited me as guest into Pixar studios recently!!! His journey towards a filmmaker is outstanding. I won't spoil  too much of it for you. Just read on. (^__^)

Within weeks of its released, Sintel, an animated film directed by Colin,
reached 1 million viewship on YOUTUBE.

INSPIRING ARTIST: WENDY aka. MASHI

Hi everyone! Its that time of the week for another interview! YES, you heard it. This week, I'm interviewing Wendy, better known as MASHI on deviantart! Her illustrations are gorgeously beautiful with her iconic curvy and sleek style that brings out the characters she is drawing. But if you indeed compliment her that way, she'll reply you with a humble Singaporean accent saying "No lah... I just draw lor..." Indeed, she is humble about her work because it took her years to reach her current position. I know, because I was there from the very beginning.

Mashi's illustrations are not only beautiful and sexy,
they often have a theme and message behind.

Black & White Series: Society Update

Exactly a year ago, I have a concept of creating a series of Black & White illustrations that reflects the society. Soon, those illustrations went into galleries and I was lucky enough to be able to sell them within three months. It was the first time my illustrations were sold in a public exhibition. From then on, I planned a bigger ambition, " To have my own gallery one day".

I am still doing the illustrations in black and white simply because of my obsession with simplicity, something my idol Steve Jobs adored greatly. A lot of my friends have suggested turning them into color versions but doesn't white contain all the spectrum in color? So today, I thought I'll post one of the many illustrations that I have been secretly hiding.

Hope you like it!

INSPIRING ARTIST: Peng Ven, Wong

Hi Everyone! This is a new fun series that I'm doing to feature artists that I feel are exceptional and inspiring. I thought that it'll be fun and awesome to interview artists that are successful and motivational allowing me to have a deeper understanding of the industry with their insights. The bottom line is, its always good to learn from others, not to mention, the "others" being great people.

For this week, I thought of many great people and the first most obvious one would be my close friend, Peng Ven, who is one of the art directors at Scrawl Studios Singapore. Their clientele includes Nickelodean, Cartoon Network, YTV, ABC, Discovery, etc.

Even though he is working full time at Scrawl Studios, Peng Ven sketches every now and then.

Busy Busy and Busy

Happy Halloween everyone! This week is a huge disaster jammed packed with stuff I cannot show. First off, I'm working on the Disney 2012 Imagination competition with 3 other SCAD students and its been great. Our idea has so much potential and right now I'm at the pre-design phase churning out tonnes of concept. The deadline is 18th November so that's 2 more weeks to go.

Secondly, I just did a free sketch for a publishing company for testing. This is for a children book cover and I haven't heard anything from them yet. Hopefully this goes well. It should, because I did the sketch in one day and it looks really awesome. (lolx)

Thirdly, I'm going to draw storyboards for an independent film. Its free service again but the cool thing is the Film will be going for Sundance! (Not to mention the director is really focus and easy to work with) I took the job because of the theme behind the story and hopefully when its done, I get to preview it.

Fourthly, I'm setting up shop for a new Anthology book out next year. I miss out on the opportunity last year and this year I'm definitely gonna put something up and try to get into the book. (Because everyone else in the anthology is such a kick ass)

Also, while all these crazy things are ongoing, there is still school which ends November 17. And on November 18th, I'm flying off to Massiveblack's conference at San Francisco. Their schedule is up and if anyone else is interested in the trip, let us know! (It'll be great because I have two other friends tagging along. It will BLOW YOUR MIND!!) (or I will, literally)

And last but not least, this is the 100th POST for our BLOG!!!!!

Comic Strip 2~~~

Ok, the last comic strip didn't make it because there isn't a real element of "story" within the 8 panel of comic. So I'm re-do another set for the assignment. In fact, I think this one is really better than the last one. Maybe,  maybe not.

If you still don't get the sub-text, its about something and something while driving and has to do with something like a phone or something. You know?

Meanwhile, Blogger has fine tune their lightbox function and it works perfectly now. Enjoy.

50 bg Set 3

I feel that this set of bgs are less creative than the previous ones. There are lots of reading, writing and thinking this quarter in school. Less hands on and thus I need to keep my sketching going before I lose the "touch". Been pretty charge up recently and saw the concept art and environments from Uncharted 2 thanks to my friend Ken (who also makes great curry puffs~!!).

Will be posting more!!

CMYK painting: Captain America

This is one of my grad class exercises for the first week. I had to render three different lighting source for Captain America. Now the funny thing is, I have been painting in Photoshop for years and had never experiment painting in such a way; applying colors that doesn't contain a single black value within. So this exercise was really insightful for me and maybe, it might be my new way of doing digital painting.

*I JUST LOVE BLOGSPOT, every image attached to blogs are enhanced now with a "lightbox" effect*

New Beginning, New Start

This week is the start of a "new year" for us because we just transferred to the school's Masters program. As it is of the first week, we have tons of reading and analyzing to do. Grad school sure is tough. And as we speak, there's an opportunity coming up for us and hopefully it goes well. More work coming up!!!

The Resident Tourist : The INDIE comic you shouldn't miss

We finally got our hands on Troy Chin's THE RESIDENT TOURIST book 5 today. Book 5 (which got thicker)  is a hard read. And by HARD read, it meant emotionally and literally in terms of text heavy. In case you have no idea, THE RESIDENT TOURIST is an auto-biography of the author/artist Troy Chin who gave up his more than comfy job in New York and started drawing comics in Singapore. For most part, it is about an individual overcoming adversities and the unique "views" of Singaporeans from cultural to political. Funny, witty and familiar, the story itself includes of things we used to know, used to do and used to love. Having read may comics, (or so we claim) the biography is really interesting as for the first time, someone out there is literally going his way out for passion and doing the things we all fear; follow your dreams.

Until Book 5 came along.

If at this point of time, you have grown interest in this story, it is about time you click HERE to preview some pages and HERE to buy the book. It is more than a simple story of a man chasing dreams with dark humor and familiar situations we all have been. It is a painful story and we sure wish we can tell you why. If you haven't read comics before or haven't heard of this book, you should really, and we meant REALLY start from this one because:

1) It is made in Singapore
2) You will start thinking about your life.
3) It is remarkably good in quality

Until you reach Book 5, don't stop. Don't miss any text bubble.
