Bakuman, バクマン Series COMPLETE. Highly Recommended

In the November of 2008, I started following the new comic series by Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata who were the creators of DEATH NOTE. These two artist wrote/drew a new comic about (guess what?) comics! The series talks about two 14 years old Mangaka and Writer working towards a dream. And one of them had a pledge with a beautiful classmate: The pledge was, if their comic becomes an anime eventually and if she becomes the voice actor of that anime, they will both get married.

The series wasn't a typical battle manga, but had the density and weight of one. (Battles between Mangakas competing in Shonen Jump Magazine) It had distinct characters throughout the series. The dialog and emotions were really well written and drawn. It showcase the struggles of an artist and writer and how fans affected their work and life. Most importantly, it was around the time where I decided to get back to art which probably meant that it spoke to me much much more. I've been a fan and have all the books until volume 7 right before I came to the States. At times when I was low, this book encourage me of what it takes to become an artist, in particular, a comic artist.

If you haven't read about the series, don't know about it, I highly recommend that you give it a try. There is romance, friendship, hard work, passion, pain, politics and most importantly, reality in this comic. The whole series is still available online dubbed by fan subs but I highly encourage you buy the book and support the artist.

Inking Techniques (With Progress)

Hi guys, so my journey down the inking road is still on going and I've decided to take work in progress shots as I was finishing this one up. For this illustration, I work slightly different, I had a few different photo reference to make up the whole illustration and I wanted to do a kind of fish-eye "look".

As some of you guys know, normally I'll sketch out my base with the Col-erase Blue pencil but this time round, I decided to test my hands and go straight into the finished work while piecing the reference together. As you can see in the illustration, I also left out the spot blacks as I go along drawing. Every time when I need to dip my brush into the black inks to "refill", instead of brushing away the inks onto a piece of paper to get it to the "right" amount of ink for a fine line work, (as seen on the piece of scratch paper in some of the pictures) I brush them off in the spot blacks now. So then I save up my inks! Hope you like it!!!

Back To Google SketchUp

Last Year about this time, I was very much into Perspective and Background drawings. I have a HUGE (and I really mean huge) amount of love for Background. That was the first time I got introduced to Google Sketchup. I did some Props Design HERE. So today, I thought I'll go back and do a simple Sketchup Study/refresher by creating a simple temple model. So here I am!

9 by 12 Inking obsessions.

My new quarter resolution as of late is to improve my inking abilities in the traditional sense. This is one hella great exercise where you use a Crowquill or traditional Brush to do a series of ink drawings. In our practice, we illustrate 7 different drawings: 1 still life, 1 portrait, 1 exterior of a building, 1 figure in an interesting dress,  1 animal, 1household object and 1 imaginary character. Here are my blue pencil sketches before the actual inks.
